Hire a Saluki

To build your brand on campus and recruit SIU students and recent alumni, make sure to always create your opportunities in Hire a Saluki (powered by Handshake). It is the official online recruitment platform at SIU and the fastest, most accessible way to reach our students. If you are new to Hire a Saluki, please review our Online Recruiting Guidelines and request an account.

To connect with students on Hire a Saluki, be sure to:

  1. Post your jobs and internships. It will broaden your search and help you reach potential applicants.
  2. Create authentic relationships by proactively messaging candidates that fit your criteria. This can drive both attendees to your virtual events and applicants to your jobs. The search filters are great for narrowing down your pool.
  3. List your virtual events in Handshake. These may include employment webinars, Q&As, and employee panels.

Events

We welcome recruiters and employers to visit campus to meet our students and inform them of career and internship opportunities within their organizations. In addition to our traditional fall and spring job and internships fairs, employers may utilize our on-campus interview rooms, arrange tabling events (primarily in our Student Center), and conduct information sessions.

Virtual events are popular with both employers and students. Conducting a virtual session is a very effective way of connecting with a number of students at once, giving them information about your company and expanding your brand on our campus. Check out these helpful resources on Going Digital With Handshake.

To list your event, complete the Create an Event section in your HIRE A SALUKI account. Once approved, all students can view it and we'll also share it on social media. Note: Please request events two weeks in advance. And, we only approve events that do not charge students a fee.

Tabling Opportunities

Many employers like to reach out to our students more informally. One of the best ways is to set up an information table in our Student Center - the main hub for students coming and going between classes and for lunch. When traditional class is in session, the recommended times are 10 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on weekdays. Please contact us at careerdevelopment@siu.edu | 618.453.2391 for more information.

The Extern Program

The Career Development Center is always seeking new SIU Alumni and friends of the University to provide externship opportunities for current students.  Externships are defined as short-term job shadow experiences that can last anywhere from a single day to a couple of weeks. They allow students to apply classroom knowledge to real experiences, engage with professionals, expand their network, and benefit from having a mentor in their chosen field.

Our formal Extern Program takes place during spring break. Informally, we connect students with willing Extern Program sponsors year-round. More information is available here.

If you are interested in being an Extern Sponsor, contact Jaime Conley, jbcholt@siu.edu | 618.453.1049.

Registered Student Organizations

Connecting with students via Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) is another great way to build your brand on campus.  SIU is home to more than 400 RSOs, including more than 170 clubs with an academic or industry focus.  Check our RSO list to learn more about these specialized student groups and how to contact their leadership.
